Abstract

"The underlying theme of Twenty-Five+ Buildings Every Architect Should Understand is the relationship of architecture to the human being, how it frames our lives and orchestrates our experience; how it can help us make sense of the world and contribute to our sense of identity and place. Exploring these dimensions through a wide range of case studies that illustrate the rich diversity of twentieth- and twenty-first-century architecture, this book is essential reading for every architect. With the addition of numerous shorter analyses, this new edition covers an even greater range of architectural ideas, providing students and architects with further inspiration for exploration in their own design work. Architects live by ideas. But where do they come from? And how do they shape buildings? There is no one right way to do architecture. This book illustrates many. Its aim is to explore the rich diversity of architectural creativity by analysing a wide range of examples to extract the ideas behind them. Twenty-Five+ Buildings Every Architect Should Understand is a companion to Simon Unwin's Analysing Architecture: the Universal Language of Place- Making (most recent edition, 2021), and part of the trilogy which also includes his Exercises in Architecture: Learning to Think as an Architect (second edition, 2022). Together the three books offer an introduction to the workings of architecture providing for the three aspects of learning: theory, examples and practice. Twenty-Five+ Buildings focusses on analysing examples using the methodology offered by Analysing Architecture, which operates primarily through the medium of drawing. An underlying theme of Twenty-Five+ Buildings Every Architect Should Understand is the relationship of architecture to the human being, how it frames our lives and orchestrates our experiences; how it can help us give form to the world and contributes to our senses of identity and place. Exploring these dimensions through case studies that illustrate the rich diversity of twentieth- and twenty-first-century architecture, this book is essential reading, and hopefully an inspiration, for every architect. In this new edition supplementary analysis and discussion has been added to each of the twenty-five case studies, drawing attention to their influences from and on other architects. A number of extra shorter analyses have been included too, following the practice of presenting extra small dishes interspersed among main courses in high-end restaurants. These additional short analyses account for the + sign after 'Twenty-Five' in the title of this edition, and double the number of buildings analysed to around fifty"--

Abstract

"The Routledge Companion to Contemporary Architectural History features twenty-nine chapters written by leading architectural historians that define and shape future research, practice, and education. In the past few decades, the study of architecture has increasingly become a highly diverse field. This collection charts its contested territories by offering a comprehensive and provocative knowledge report of contemporary architectural history, practice, and research. It provides an essential map for navigating the complex currents of contemporary architecture. Divided into three parts - Histories, Interrogations, and Innovations - this book emphasizes diversity, criticality, and creativity in architectural interventions to meet challenges and enact changes in different parts of the world through featured exemplars. The diverse contributions recognize multiple spatial rationalities and incorporate cross-cultural frameworks in studying the competing claims of architectural modernity. Illustrated with over 125 black and white images, this volume offers scholars, students and practitioners an evaluation of current and emerging approaches to architecture"--

Abstract

Structured as five microhistories c. 632-705, this book offers a counternarrative for the formation of Islamic architecture and the Islamic state. It adopts a novel periodization informed by moments of historical violence and anxiety around caliphal identities in flux, animating histories of the minbar, throne, and maqsura as a principal nexus for navigating this anxiety. It expands outward to re-assess the mosque and palace with a focus on the Qubbat al-Khadraʾ and the Dar al-Imara in Kufa. It culminates in a reading of the Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem as a site where eschatological anxieties and political survival converge.

Abstract

Vernacular Architecture: Critical and Primary Sources brings together for the first time a collection of essential and foundational readings in the study of vernacular architecture and the traditional building cultures of the world. Collating scholarly historical texts from the last 200 years from a wide range of sources, this four-volume set offers a key knowledge resource for the field. It creates for the first time a comprehensive framework through which to understand the critical aspects and diverse interpretations of vernacular architecture studies, vital to much ongoing research in the built environment, in heritage studies, and material culture studies. Each volume includes a substantial contextualizing introduction, while the texts are arranged according to themes which correspond to the chronological and intellectual development of the field, reflecting the subject's evolution from primarily rural, romantic and traditional interpretations through to thoroughly contemporary and interdisciplinary definitions of the field. These contemporary perspectives connect to new scholarship on the explosive growth of cities and the global urban future - and are thus the concern not only of scholars who are seeking to understand the built world but also of professional architects, planners and citizens who continue to draw lessons from the vernacular and to apply them to design, procedures and political formations. Accordingly, this is a reference collection which enables both a critical understanding of the subject and a way to connect theory with contemporary professional practice. This work will represent an essential addition to libraries and a major scholarly resource for architecture, building conservation / historic preservation, town planning, material culture, art history, geography, and heritage studies.
